Stop the Sri Lankan Government from killing millions of stray dogs

The Sri Lankan government has decided to revert to destroying strays, a practice suspended five years ago, because of rabies concerns.

This puts the lives of millions of stray dogs at immediate risk.

Killing strays is not the way to prevent rabies in humans. The most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies in people is by eliminating rabies in dogs through vaccination.

There are several animal welfare groups in Sri Lanka conducting sterilization and vaccination programs year-round. We must show the government of Sri Lanka that sterilization and vaccination is the ONLY humane way to control dog populations and eradicate rabies.

A taste of After OL's

I just finished my G.C.E. (OL) exams (a.k.a. සාපෙ) last wednesday the 21st of december 2011. It started on the 12th and went on for 10 long days. Each second, minute and hour was a struggle during that brief period but it was a good experience for me because right after the exams finished i realized that i have developed many qualities that i did not seem to possess earlier. OL's were a dreadful yet a memorable experience. On the day it ended i went out for a movie at sri lanka's only 3D film theatre which was built while we were doing our exams with some of my friends. We watched the 3 musketeers there at 4.15 and we roamed majestic city for about an hour and we got a chance to sing a christmas carol on tnl rocks radio booth at MC and we won our selves each a kik cola bottle. Thereafter we had dinner at some new restaurant called eat more in bambalapitiya and for dessert we went to il gelato. That was one of the best times of my life, not only because i had a lot of fun but also because i was relieved of a headache which i have been carrying on my shoulders for 2 whole years. Unfortunately on thursday and friday i got sick and i was bed ridden. I was so bored that i actually went through 150 of my friends profiles on facebook that day. Then i also did a lot of reading. Today i finally convinced my parents to buy me a Canon EOS D60 dSLR camera which i will be getting on tuesday. As soon as i get it i'll master the art of photography and i'll have a profile on flickr and i'll post my favourite photographs on this blog. I also started a company called Red Flicks Motion Pictures. I cannot disclose any further details about that company for now as it is still in it's basic stages but if it becomes a success i will be sure to post it on this blog asap.

How to webcast using UStream

Hello, I'm going to show you how to live stream or webcast video content using the online platform UStream in this step by step text and photo tutorial. I have been an active user of ustream since 2009, and I have web cast almost 200 live events ever since, using ustream. And personally I prefer ustream because it's a very simple yet effective way to deliver your content to your viewers. I guarantee you that at the end of this tutorial you would be able to web cast like a pro ;)

Step 1 : Creating an Account and Logging In.

First you need to create an account at http://ustream.tv. When you visit the site a page similar to the picture below will appear. This is the home page of ustream. Now you have to create an account, for that you'll have to click on the "Sign Up" link which is at the top right corner of the home page right before the big yellow "Go Live!" button.

After you select that you will be directed to a page like this,

After you fill in your credentials ustream will send a confirmation email to you. After you activate your account your'e an official UStreamer!

But your still a few steps away from web casting.

Now you have to go and log in to your new account.

Then type your username and password (in my case "MinuraJPerera" and "******") in the respective fields, click on the yellow "Login" button.

Then you will be directed to your home page.

If your user name appears on the top right corner that means that you have successfully logged in!

Step 2 : Creating a Channel

Now when you position your cursor above your user name ("MinuraJPerera" in my case) a menu will drop down containing your account type (which says "Basic") and "Go to Dashboard" etc.

From that selection follow the "Go to Dashboard Link". Then you'll be directed to your Dashboard a.k.a the CPU of UStream from where you could control all your channels, shows, account settings et cetera.

This is how your dashboard will look like. Before you start broadcasting you need to have a channel. To create one click on the yellow "Create a Channel" on the left side of the dashboard right below your username.

After you selected the"Create a Channel" button a box will pop up asking you to name your channel. I named my one as "ROYAL176". After you come up with a suitable name click the "Create" button.

Now you'll fall on to a page like this, here you have to fill in some basic information about your channel such as it's category, a picture, and what it's about. And make sure you type a few tags and when you're done "Save" your information. Once you save, you have successfully created a channel.

Step 3 : Going Live!

Now that you have created a channel, it's time for you to go LIVE!

First click the yellow button on the right hand top corner of your homepage.

After you click it a box will pop up asking you to choose a channel. I selected the one that I just created (ROYAL176). Then click the "Broadcast" button.

Then the control panel will start loading on a new browser window.

After it finishes loading you will have to permit accessibility to your camera and microphone for the UStream control panel. Hint - Just click the "Allow" button ;)

Then the complete control panel will launch, but before you broadcast you must select the video and audio sources.

After you select the correct sources you must select the video quality which suites your bandwidth. Then adjust the volume of the stream, and afterwards make sure you have ticked the "Video Broadcast". "audio Broadcast" and "Local Monitor" options. Once your through with all that your ready to broadcast.

Once you click the green "START BROADCAST" button it will turn into a red "STOP BROADCAST" button which allows you to start or stop the broadcast whenever you want.

Another option is to record your stream. You can achieve this by clicking the "START RECORD" button and it works just like the start broadcast button.

And you can ask your friends to watch your show at www.ustream.tv/channel/your channel name/ (mine is http://www.ustream.tv/channel/royal176)

This is how your stream will look like.

Now we have covered the basics of broadcasting on UStream. There are many other options available, and I will create tutorials and explore them with you, shortly ;)

X46DZE4GUF4N Currently I am going through my second term exams. I will be facing the OL examination this December and at the moment I am not ready at all. But I have a very methodical plan to gain about 8A's for the 9 subjects that I do. Actually my plan is to work according to a schedule I made. According to that schedule I must completely wander from facebook.com which I managed to successfully complete. The second step is to limit my time on the internet to around 45 minutes for a day, which is just enough time for me to check my email, to work on a blog post and to check my tweets for the day. The third step is to avoid wasting time, I actually planned to study for 10 hours a day which leaves me with another 14 hours, when I reduce 8 hours from it to sleep, i end up with a further 6 hours. From that six hours two mores are further deducted for my tuition which leaves me with 4 hours to travel, eat, to watch some TV,to read a few newspaper articles, to go online;), and for other various activities of leisure. I know it's a tough schedule but it's only for four months plus the results will be extremely good as well, that i can assure without any doubt [only if I manage to work according to the schedule;)]. But in order to follow it I need to cut school, which is not encouraged by anyone. But it's the only way, and it must be done as my future depends on it.

As we set our focus back to the topic "Mid Term Exams : Loosely Tense" you and I both suddenly realize that we've been hoovering off the topic. When I say that I am feeling loosely tense during the mid term exams while all or at least most of my colleagues are feeling really tense I didn't mean that I don't care about this exam, I actually meant that I am not targeting for it as any other person is going to fail the first major hurdle of his/her life would do. (I'm not gonna fail my exam, I just want to get better grades, I want the best grades) There's a reason why I need good grades. It's because in the present middle class society good grades are a bundle of joy for parents and relations and it's a popular and a very effective way of showing everybody that they are superior. I know it sounds crazy but it's the truth. Getting good grades has become more of a trend than an educational qualification.

Anyways, my 45 minutes for today is coming to an end and it's time for me to say Good Bye, so GOOD BYE!

X46DZE4GUF4N Adopt a street pooch! I came across this when I was going through my email this afternoon. I think this is a splendid idea. Thumbs up for embark! Embark is actually a subsidiary of Odel; Sri Lanka's only department store.

It seems to me that their actually doing a good job. Once there was a stray cat wandering in my neighbourhood with an odd ball shaped pinkish thing attached to his tail. One of my neighbours figured out that it was actually some sort of boil and they called embark. Within a few hours they arrived in a mini van, caught the cat and left with my neighbour to the Animal Hospital. The boil was actually a cancer and the cat was immediately operated and within a few days he was cured. Afterwards the cat was put back to the neigbourhood to continue to wander about. And then they revisited about a month later to check on the cat and they gave the cat some treats and left.

Another neigbour of mine adopted a puppy from embark a few years back. She says that an embark crew visits the then-pup-now-dog once in every 4 months and checks the situation and helps the dog owner if he has any financial difficulties which may affect the dog . They also vaccinate the pups so whoever is planning to adopt one wouldn't have to worry about it.

So I encourage anyone who wishes to get a pup to go get one from embark.

COLOMBO-KATUNAYAKE EXPRESSWAY PROGRESSING AS SCHEDULED.

Construction of the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway project is progressing as scheduled. This 25.8 km expressway from the New Kelani bridge to Katunayake is being built as a high mobility link between the city of Colombo and Katunayake International Airport, to promote outward migration of people from Colombo area, to improve mobility needs of the industrial development areas in the vicinity and the associated container traffic, and to reduce traffic congestion on the A3 road (Peliyagoda-Puttalam road). 85% of the 292 Million U.S.Dollar project is being funded by a Chinese Government loan. The project is being implemented by the Metallurgical China Group Corporation.

The Expressway will have 4 to 6 lanes with the width ranging from 26 meters to 33.5 meters. It is estimated that upon completion of this Expressway the commuters could travel to Katunayake in 20 minutes. This project was first initiated in 1967 and a structure was also erected in Peliyagoda in this regard. However, for political and various other reasons the project was totally abandoned. Under the Mahindana Chintana programme of improving road transport facilities attention was given to this project and upon negotiating with the Chinese government about the financing arrangements, the project was started on 18th August, 2009. This project is expected to be completed in 39 months.

There will be 4 interchange points located at New Kelani Bridge, Peliyagoda, Je Ela and at Katunayake, and at these points the Expressway will be connected to the Negombo road, Kandy expressway, outer circular ring road connecting with Matara-Colombo express way and with other access roads.

The Project Director of the Expressway Mr. P. Gunaratne told the development.lk that the Expressway will have 42 bridges and 80 culverts. Construction work on 10 bridges has already started, and 20 culverts have been completed. 18% of the project work is completed by now, and rest of the work is progressing expeditiously.

Most of the area of the Expressway runs across deep muddy terrain and this surface is being filled and pressed with sea sand mined off Hanwella coast. A large extent of land in the Kerawelapitiya area is being used as the sand deposit area.

Colombo Port City

Colombo Port City is a proposed offshore city in Colombo, Sri Lanka which is planned to be built on reclaimed land adjacent to the Galle Face Green. The city will use construction resources from the Colombo Harbour Expansion Project, currently under construction near the site of this proposed city.

The New Port City is a concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who was apparently inspired while out on a visit to inspect the landfill being constructed for the Colombo South port.

The Port city is to be constructed between the Southern edge of the new Colombo South Port and the Fort Lighthouse. The total area of sea to be reclaimed is 450 acres.

The construction is set to begin in March 2011 with an initial budget of $450 million. Land reclamation is expected to be completed by the end of 2012, while subsequent infrastructure construction is projected to take another one and a half years.

The proposed city will be built on 2 km² (1 sq mi) of reclaimed land, stretching out 2 km (1 mi) from shore.

The New Port City is to include a new Formula One track, constructed in the vicinity of the Colombo Harbour. According to Dr. Priyath Wickrama, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, says an eight lane F1 track will “definitely” be a part of the New Port City. The circuit is to be located in the city whilst allowing for maximum leeway for commercial activities.

මව තුළ ඔහු කෙරෙහි වු මෘදු ආදරයත් සමඟ එම ලිපි තුළින් මතු වූ සියුම් අවලාද නැඟීම් ඔහුට තේරුමක් ගත හැකි විය. ඒවා දක්වා තිබු මුදු මොළොක් බව ඔහුගේ වේදනාව තීව‍්‍ර කළේය. එපමණක් ද නොව තම පුතු කෙරෙහි අන් අය තුළ අගෞරවයක්, ආදරයක් ඇති කිරිමට අම්මා අම්මාට ලියා ගත් ලිපි අසල්වාසීන්ට ඥාතීන්ට නිතර කියවන්නට ඇති බව බෂීර්ට හැඟී ගියේය. ඉතා කාර්ය බහුල බැවින් ඔබ ඔබේ සිතින් මා නිර්දෝෂ කරන්නට ඇත. යම් හෙයකින් මා ඔබට ලිය්නනේ නම් මෙසේ ලියනු ඇතැයි ඔබ සිතන්නට ද ඇත. බෂීර් එසේ තනිව හිතමින් අනෙක් ලියුම් ද කියවන්නට විය.

මගේ රත්තරන් අම්මේ,

අම්මා දන්නේ නැතුව ඇති මම අම්ම ගැන කොයි තරම් ආඩම්බර වෙනවද කියල. මතකද හිම කලින්ම වැටෙන්න ගත්ත ශීත සෘතුව. බැටලූවන්ට උන්ගෙ තණ බිමෙන් පහළට එන්න කාලයක් තිබ්බෙ නැහැ. උන්ට පැටවු ලැබෙන්න පටන් ගත්ත. මට දැන් වගේ මතකයි. අම්ම ඔළුව වටේ වැටෙන්න දිග සාලූව ඔතාගෙන තාත්තගෙ උස බූට්ස් සපත්තු දාගෙන, ගෙදරින් ගෙදරට දුවගෙන ගිහින් ඒ බැටලූ පැටවු බෙදුවා. අපේ ගාල පුරවලා විතරක් නෙවෙයි කාමරයත් පුරවල බැටලූ පැටවු. ඒ විතරක්ද, ඒ ශීත සෘතුව මුළුල්ලේ කන්දට නැඟට හිමවලට යටවෙලා තිබුණු පහුගිය අවුරුද්දෙ තණකොළ උදුරගෙන ඇවිත් බැටළු පැටවුන්ට කවල උන්ව ආරක්ෂා කළා.

එක දවසක් ? අපි ගෙදර ආවෙ ඇට මිදුලි කපාගෙන යන සීතලේ. ගෙදර ආපු හැටියෙ උදුන ළඟ උණුසුමේ වැටිල අපි නිදා ගත්ත. එකපාරටම ඇහුනා කවුදෝ ජනේලයට තට්ටු කරනවා. මට මතකයි ඔබ එක පාරටම නැගිටල කිව්ව ,?ට ගෙනෙන තොරතුරු නං හොඳ ඒවා නෙවෙයි, කියල. මම පොරෝණය අස්සේ ගුලිවෙලා හිටිය. මට ඇහුනා අම්ම කෑගහනව ,අගා උඹ බයගුල්ලෙක්. නියම මිනිස්සු සටහනට ගිහින්. උඹ මීයෙක්. මීයන්ට ඔහොම බඩු අස්සෙ ඉන්න පුලූවන් පූසෝ නැති හින්ද., ඉන් පස්සේ ඔබ මගේ ළඟට ඇවිත්ත කිව්ව, ඉක්මණට ලොකු වෙන්න මගේ පුතේ. මට විශ්වාසයි මගේ පුතා මාව පර්වතයක් වගේ ආරක්ෂා කරයි. එතකොට එක බයගුල්ලෙකුටවත් බැහැ මේ ගේ ඇතුළට හොම්බ දාන්න., කියල.

මට ඔබේ ආරක්ෂකයා වෙන්න ඕන අම්මෙ. අම්ම වෙනුවෙන් මම මොනවද කරන්න ඕන. මට ඉක්මනට කියල එවන්න.

මගේ ආදර රත්තරන් අම්මේ,

නපුරු කටකතා වලින් ඔබට ආරක්ෂා කරන්න බැරිවීම ගැන මට සමාවන්න අම්මෙ. මට කිට්ටුව එකම එක්කෙනා විදිහට අම්මට මාව තේරුම් ගන්න පුළුවන් වෙයි. අම්මා තෝරාගත් ගමේ මනමාලියව මං ප‍්‍රතික්ෂේප කළේ අම්මා කෙරෙහි හෝ මගේ කඳුකර ගම කෙරෙහි හෝ ගරු සරු නැතිකම නිසා නෙවෙයි. මෙහි සිටින සයිබීරියානු තරුණියක හා මම පෙමින් බැඳුණා. ඔබත් ඇයට ආදරය කරනවා නේද අම්මෙ? ඇය ඉතා ගුණවත් ආදරණීය කෙනෙක්. අපේ කඳුකරයේ තණ බිමක් වගේම ඇයත් විවෘතයි. පේ‍්‍රමය මොකක්ද කියල මට දැනුණේ දැනුයි ඒ සතුට ප‍්‍රීතිය ඔබට ලබා දීම මං වැළැක්කුවා. ඒ ගැන මතක් වෙද්දී මට දැන්නේ කියා නිම කළ නොහැකි දුකක් හා පසුතැවිල්ලක්. මං මේ කියන්නේ සාදික් ගැනයි. ඔහු අපේ ගෙදර ඇවිත් පුටු ආදිය අලූත්වැඩියා කළා. නිතර පැමිණී ඔහු කෙරෙහිඔබ අවධානයෙන් ඉන්නවා දැකල මං ඔහුට ඊර්ෂ්‍යා කළා. මං දවසක් ඔහුටත් ඔබටත් නපුරු විදිහට කතා කරල ගෙදරින් පිට උනා. මං ඒ ගැන දැන් කොයිතරම් කණගාටු වෙනවද? සමහරවිට මට සහෝදරයෙක් හෝ සහෝදරියක් හිටිය නම් ඔයට ඔය තරම් කණගාටුවක් දැනෙන්නේ නැති වෙයි. එයින් පසු මම සාදික් දැක්කෙ නැහැ. මට ආරංචි උනා ඔහු විවාහ උනවාය කියල. ඔබ එක්වරම මහලූ උනා වගේ පෙණුනා. එත් අම්මෙ මම එදා ඒක ඒ තරම් සැලකිල්ට ගත්තෙ නෑ.

අම්මට මතකද මං පොඩි කාලෙ අම්ම මගෙ ඔලූව අත ගාල කියනව ,ලොකු උනහම මගේ පුතා ශක්තිමත් නිර්භීත කෙනෙක් වෙයි. එතකොට ලස්සනම ගෑණු ළමයෙක් ඔයාට ආදරය කරයි. එයා සුරිය කදම්බයක් වගේ ඇවිත් අපේ ගේ ආලෝක කරයි. උදුන වගේ උණුසුම් කරයි., කියල. ඒ වගේම කිව්ව ,වසන්තයේ තණ බිම් වල පිපුණු මල් වගේ ලස්සන සලූවක් මගේ ලේලි මට තෑගි කරයි. එතකොට මං මගේ වැන්දඹු කළු සලූව ඉවත් කරනවා. මිනිස්සු හැම කෙනෙක්ම එදාට මට සතුට ප‍්‍රකාශ කරයි., කියල. මගේ ආදර අම්මෙ. ඔබේ ලේලිය ඔබට තෑගි කරන මල් වැටුණු සළුව මේ සමඟ එවනවා. වැන්දඹු කළු සලූව ඉවත් කරන්න. මගේ අම්මා කළු සලූව පැළඳුවා දැන් ඇති.

කිව නොහැකි වේදනාවකින් බෂීර් දැවෙන්නට විය. ඔහු වැළපෙනවාදැයි ඔහුටම දැණුනේ නැත. දෙඇසින් ගලා ගිය කඳුළු කම්මුල් හරහා නොනැවතී ගලා යන්නට වූවත් කඳුළු පිසීමට කිසිදු වෙහෙසක් නොගෙත් බෂීර් වරින් වර සිය ලේන්සුව නාසයට තබමින් නාසය පිරිසිදු කළේ හුස්ම ගැනීමට අපහසමු වනතෙක් නාසය හිරවූ නිසාය. මේ ලියුම කෙතරම් නිවැරදි විය යුතුද?

,අම්මේ ඔබට සියල්ල අමතකද? ඔබ මගේ විවාහය පිළිබඳව දැන ගත්තේ විවාහ වී අවුරුදු දෙකකුත් ගතවූ පසුයි. ඔබ කොතෙක් නම් අපට ගමට ඇවිත් යන ලෙස ආයාචනා කළාද? අපි නිවාඩු කාලයන් ක‍්‍රිමියාවල, කොකේසස්වල, බල්ගේරියාවල ගත කළෙමු. එපමණක් නොව බෝල්ටක් සහ කාපේතියන් වල සංචාරය කළෙමු. ඒත් එකම නිවාඩුවකට හෝ ඔබ ළඟට එන්නට අපි උත්සාහ කළේ නෑ. ඒත් එක් දවසක මං කුඩා කලදි ප‍්‍රිය කළ බොහෝ කැවිලි පෙවිලි වේවැල් මලූවල පුරවා ගෙන ඔබ අප බලන්නට පැමිණියා. කළු සලූව ඉවත දමා ලස්සන මල් මල් සලූවක් ඔබ එදා පැළඳගෙන සිටියා. ඔබේ රුසියානු ලේලිය ඔබට තෑගි කළා යයි ඔබ පෙන්වන්නට ඇත්තේ ඒ සලූවද? මතකද අම්මේ නගරය පෙන්වන්නට මම ඔබ සමඟ එදා ඇවිද්දා. කුඩා වූවත් සෘජුව, ඔබ මෙලොවට බිහිකල ඔබ මෙන් දෙගුණයක උස් වු ඔබේ පුතා සමඟ ඔබ ගමන් කළා. අප ගොඩනැඟු ගොඩනැගිලි නරඹමින් නිහඩ ආඩම්බරයකින් නගරය පුරා ඇවිද්දා. එහෙත් එකම එක අවස්ථාවක හෝ එකම අවලාද වචනයක් හෝ ඔබේ මුවින් පිට වුයේ නැහැ ...,

While all spheres of the activities of the country were shaped in a way that enabled the British Raj to acquire the resources of Sri Lanka and to produce what they need through the investment their capital, the indigenous people had no option except to play the obedient role of the servant.

Introduction of widely spread use of money and thereby the establishment of a society that gives the pride of place to money.

Complete destruction of the social system replete with the core values which practiced a peaceful co-existence and abundant mutual co-operation that derived from our ancestors.

OLs are nearing and at the moment i am not ready for it. But psychologicaly i am ready to undergo all the hardships inorder to achieve my target. I am not sure whether i will be able to get 9A's but i am trying my best. OLs actually dont give the smart people the opportunity to succeed, instead it is for all those who could endure hardships. It is one of the most tougest challenges that one could face. As my friend Danushka sir who teaches me sinhala told me we must have a target and we must achieve it.

Then, life was really tough!

Mother wouldn't let our friends just honk

They had to come up to the door

so she could meet them.

While everyone else could date

when they were 12 or 13,

we had to wait until we were 16.

Because of our mother we missed out

on lots of things other kids experienced.

None of us have ever

been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other's

property or ever arrested for any crime.

It was all her fault.

Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults.

We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was.

I think that is what's wrong with the world today.

It just doesn't have enough mean moms!

132nd Battle of The Blues

this years big match was different for me compared to the previous one. Last year i was an official at the match, i was in-charge of the video coverage representing the media unit of royal college with my colleagues. this year i was just a normal spectator, as normal as it was, just a spectator. me and my crew were supposed to cover the match this year as well, but we were unable to do it because a new channel namely CSN got the broadcasting rights.

i thought the match would be boring as ever so i actually considered not to go, but at the end i just did. i spent the first half of the first day in the boys tent with all my friends and with the papare. for lunch i went to queens cafe with some of my friends and we played some pool and we had 9 submarines. after lunch i decided to go to another tent, the seylan pavilion. that was a different experience because the fun involved in it was quite manly. there were a few fights between the drunken old boys and i joined in as well. there was a dull papare with us which we denied to enjoy though we did. and we also met an old boy who was working in the air force, he gave us a big lecture about college, and then he told he was boasting about his life in college and how he enjoyed the match as a student. and when the days play was over we were allowed to go to the ground where yet another fight took place, but this time between a thora and one of my friends.

on the second day i didn't go to the boys tent but instead i went to the royal taverners', ssc up and otsc. i didnt enjoy the second day as much as the first day.

on the third day i went to seylan again and stayed till lunch, for lucnh i had some hot dogs and i went to the boys tent where the excitement was quite high. everyone was cheering for college so i joined them and sang along. the papre was franatic, they were playing non stop at the end of the match and everyone gathered around it and danced their way through the rest of the match. royal didnt win this time, instead it ended up being drawn as everyone predicted.

though this was a different experience for me i still enjoyed it. but next time i hope to cover the match because thats what i do best.

Sri Lanka experiences record low temperatures

Jan 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka is experiencing record low temperatures currently, the Meteorology Department says.

According to the Meteorology Department the temperature in Colombo has dropped to 18.8 Celsius (65 Fahrenheit). Reportedly, it is the lowest recorded in 61 years.

Meanwhile, the temperature in Nuwara Eliya has dropped to 7.9 Celsius and in Batticaloa, mercury dipped to 16.9 Celsius, the Meteorology Department reported.The Meteorology Department says the cold weather is to continue today.

Meteorologists say the La Ni�a weather pattern in the Pacific is causing the disruption in the weather across the globe causing floods in Australia and Sri Lanka.

According to a BBC Meteorologist, La Ni�a causes strong easterly winds that could prevail across to Sri Lanka and interact with the normal north east monsoon to produce heavy rainfall.

In Batticaloa of the Eastern Province the unusual weather pattern has produced a rainfall of 1606.2 mm just in 42 days during the period from 1st December 2010 to 12th January 2011, almost equal to its total annual rainfall. The annual total rainfall of the district was 1650.9 mm.

Similarly Trincomalee has received a rainfall of 1030.6 mm during the same period while its annual rainfall was 1580.1 mm, the Meteorology Department reported.

2010 : A New Beginning

2010 was a turning point in my life, mainly because I joined the Media Unit of Royal College; a club dedicated to media which is just the thing that I have been looking for. My first major task at MURC was to webcast and to organize the launch of the 175th anniversary of Royal College press conference together with Birendre Jayatileke. Afterwards we had to cover the Religious Celebrations for the 175th anniversary. By this time I had already met a lot of interesting personalities and powerful figures. The next major event was the 131st Battle of The Blues commonly known as The Big Match. It was a cricket match played between Royal College and St.Thomas's College. We at MURC had to cover the Big Match, and I got a leading role at it. While all this was happening I was living a very shaded life at my class. My class teacher was Mr.Midipolawatte, he was a very humorous but a very serious character. My class was 10E, but for the whole of the first term I was not in it, in the first period I used to come to the class and excuse myself and then I left saying that I had work which was very true. But the worst part about the first term and probably the whole of 2010 was that I completely ignored my studies. I was heavily involved in MURC projects that I hardly any time at all to study. Even if I did manage to find some time I couldn't study because I was always distracted. The first term ended with success and failure alike. I was determined to perform better next term for what it's worth in my studies and in all my other extra curricular activities as well.

The second term was yet another chapter in my life where I met some vivid people and I gained a lot of experiences. I was determined to balance everything this time. The highlight of this term was the Rugby Season. My job was to webcast the whole season on the MURC blog. So that's exactly what I did. Me and my crew went through a lot of trouble whilst gaining a lot of positive experiences. We went to every single rugby game played against Royal College; even to Kandy. The other big thing about this term was the English drama that we did for a inter-house drama festival. I got the less fortunate job of directing it. The drama came out just fine, we performed it on stage without any visible flaws. I did relatively well at my second term exams but I was still not satisfied with it. I was determined to do better next time.

I was quite busy on the third term because I suddenly realised that I had to study everything that 'we' (which excludes myself very often) learnt on 2010. It was a struggle not only to me but for others as well, so panic was to be seen everywhere. Despite all those hardships I managed to face my exam valiantly and I also managed to get some good marks for a change.

2011 is going to be a tough year for me because I will be facing like many people say "the first big hurdle of my life"; the Ordinary Level Exam which is pretty advanced despite the name. I will have to stop all co-curricular activities for that year and I would have to focus on my studies more often. As far as I know 2011 is going to be a very hard and enduring year.

Follow up of Hi Internet!! (Part II)

Back in February this year i posted my very first 'real' blog post namely 'Hi Internet!!', it has been eleven months since that day. On that post i focused on my introduction to the internet and my life being a journalist (the media unit part). Well, this is like a follow up of that post.

It has been an year since I 'actually' joined the the media unit I have accomplished a lot. All of my plans for 2010 ended up as a success, I achieved a lot, now I actually have a name for my self and I've so far been able to be a positive influence to many. I managed to enter the top board of MURC and I know all most all of the senior staff of my school; Royal College. I also have a very steady bond with the prefects council and many of the students as well. People call me the 'Video Man' or the 'Media Guy' and all most everybody respects me for who I am and in return I respect them without bragging about my success.

After joining MURC my capacity of work increased dramatically. I am able to handle very serious and large events, functions etc. I also gained experience being a cinematographer and an video editor, i also developed my ability to compeer all thanks to Birendre Jayatileke, the very person responsible for my fame and success.

But I manage not to brag about my success, and I intend to work hard no matter how confident I am because I believe that people could be blinded by their own success that they oversee even the simplest of tasks.

Christmas 2010

This Christmas was very different for me. This time we didn't go for any parties nor any dinners. Christmas night was also very normal for us, we had kottu instead of the traditional Christmas dinner. We put up a Christmas tree but no one was bothered to light it up. We didn't receive any Christmas greetings though we greeted some. And it was the same all around, this year Christmas was very low all over Sri Lanka. Very few people considered it to be joyous and merry. In short everyone just lost their Christmas spirit.

But there has to be a reason for all this. And there is. The cost of living in Sri Lanka has increased dramatically. The most famous example for it is the price of single coconut which increased from Rs.12 to Rs.60 in five years. Poverty is being spread across the country, very few people are able to live a normal life. Sri Lanka is economically falling. Ans someone should do something about it or we'll never be able to enjoy another Christmas again.

වර්තමානයේ ළමුන් බොහෝ සංඛ්‍යාවක් තම පාසලේ හදාරන විශයන් සඳහා උපකාරක පන්ති වලට යයි. "ටියුෂන් පන්ති" ලෙස හැඳින්වන මෙම උපකාරක පන්ති අප රට බොහෝ ප්‍රදේශ වල ආරම්ඹ කර ඇත. විශ්‍රාම ලත් ගුරුවරු ද උපාදිදාරින් ද පාසල් වල සේවය කරන ගුරුවරුන්ද මෙවැනි උපකාරක පන්ති වල සේවය කරති.

මෙම උපකාරක පන්ති අතර "ටියුෂන් කඩ" හෙවත් "සිග්මා", "සිප්සර", "ලූවර්" වැනි මහා පරිමානයෙන් කරන් ව්‍යාපාර ද ඇත. මෙම ව්‍යාපාර වල මූලික අරමුන වන්නේ සමාජ සුබසාධනය නොව ලාබ ලැබීමයි. මොවුන් එක් සිසුවකුගෙන් රු.600 ක පමන මුදලක් එක් විශයක් සඳහා අය කරයි. එහෙත් මෙවැනි "ටියුෂන් කඩයක" එක පන්තියක පමනක් සිසුවන් 50කට වැඩි සංඛ‍යාවක් සිටිති. එනිසා මෙවනි උපකාරක පන්තියක් පාසලක පන්තියක් හා සමානයි. එවිට එයින් කිසි ඵලයක් ද නැත. එහෙත් දෙමවුපියෝ තම දරුවන්ව මෙවැනි ස්ථාන වලට එවයි.

ළමුන්ට උපකාරක පන්ති වලට යෑමට සිදුවන්නේ ඇයි? පාසලේ නිසි ලෙස සිසුන්ට උගන්වන්නේ නැද්ද? නැත්නම් අනිත් ළමුන් යන නිසා විලාසිතවක් වශයෙන් යනවාද? ඉහත කී සෑම කරුණක්ම මෙයට ඍජුව බලපායි.

සම'හරක්' පාසල්වල ගුරුවරුන් ළමුන්ට නිසි ලෙස උගන්වන්නේ නැත. ඔවුන් ඉගැන්වීම් සඳහා උනන්දු වන්නේ නැති වෙන්න පුළුවන්, ඉගැන්වීමට දක්ෂ නැති වෙන්න ද පුළුවන්. මෙවැනි ගුරුවරුන් අප අතර ද නිරන්තරයෙන්ම දක්නට ලැබෙයි. එනිසා අධ්‍යාපන දෙපාර්තුමෙන්තුව විමසිලිමත්ව සිටිය යුතුය. මෙවැනි ගුරුවරුන් මගින් ඇතිවෙන හානිය නැවැත්විය යුතුය.

එහෙත් ගුරුවරුන් නිසි ලෙස උගන්වන්නේ නැති එක ගුරුවරුන්ගේ වරදක්ද? එය තමා උගන්වන විෂයේ වරදක් විය හැකිය නැතහොත් පාසලේ වරදක්ද විය හැකිය . සාමාන්‍යයෙන් එක ගුරුවරයකුට පාසලක පන්ති පහක ඉගැන්විය යුතුය එහෙත් සමහර පාසල් වල එක් පන්තියක ළමයින් ඉතා වැඩි සංඛ්‍යාවක් සිටිය හැකිය. ඒ සෑම ළමයකුටම විවිධ බුද්ධි මට්ටම් ද ඇත. එනිසා ගුරුවරයාට ඒ සෑම ළමයකුටම වටහා ගත හැකි ආකාරයට එගැන්වීමට සිදුවීම මානසික හිස රදයක් විය හැකිය. මේ ආකාරයට වසර ගණනක් ඉගන්වීමේදී ගුරුවරුන්ටද උද්‍යේගය අඩුවිය හැකිය.

ළමුන්ට නිසි ලෙස පාසලේ ඉගෙනගන්නට අපහසු වන්නේ ද, උපකාරක පන්ති වලට යෑමට අවශ්‍ය වන්නේ ද ඔවුන් හදාරන විෂය නිර්දේෂය නිසා විය හැකිය. සාමාන්‍ය පෙල විභාගයට මුහුන දෙන සිසුවකුට වසර දෙකක විෂය නිර්දේෂයක් ඇත. එයින් එක් සිසුවකු විෂයන් නවයක් හැදෑරිය යුතුය. සාමන්‍ය පෙළ සිසුවකු එක් විෂයක් සඳහා පාසලේ පැය 192ක් ගත කරයි. එවනි විෂයන් නවයක දැනුම අවබෝධයට ලක් කිරීම ලෙහෙසි පහසු කාර්‍ය්යක් නොවේ. මේ ආකාරයෙන් බැලූ විට උපකාරක පන්ති වලට යෑම වරදක් නොවේ.

"වර්තමාන අධ්‍යාපන ක්‍රමය ළමුන්ට සුදුසු නැත" යන ප්‍රකාෂය ඉහල ඡේදයෙන් පැහැදිලි වේ. අධ්‍යාපන අමාත්‍යංශය වහ වහාම මෙය වෙනස්කර යුතුය. නැතහොත් ඉදිරි අනාගතයේ බිහිවන්නේ සිතක් පපුවක් නොමැති, මත් ද්‍රව්‍ය වලට ඇබ්බහි වූ, විකෘති වූ කෘතීම පරම්පරාවකි. ලොවම පිළිගත් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සුපිරිතම පාසලක් ලෙස සැළකෙන රාජකීය විද්‍යාලයට යන මට ලමයකුට ලබා ගත හැකි, ලැබිය යුතු සියළු සම්පත් ලැබී ඇත. පාන්දර පහට අවදි වී පාසල් ගිහින් ගෙදර පැමිණෙන විට සවස හත පමන වෙයි. මෙවැනි ජීවන රටාවකට වසර ගණනාවක් තිස්සේ කොටු වී සිටියහොත් කෘතීම වන එක පුදුමයක් නොවේ.

1st Term Exams

this is the very first exam that i took in grade 10….. and this is probably the worst ever.. facing this exam was one of the hardest challenges that i have ever come across.. normally, i do well in exams, i have no problem facing them.. but his one was different, totally different, i was completely unprepared…. i was too obsessed with other stuff such as media work and all.. the good thing was that i learnt something out of MURC, but the bad thing is that all of it was official, that meant i had a lot of powers officially… that meant no one could stop me, not even me because i couldn't go against it… even if i could i never tried cause i like work for MURC.. and the worst part about this exam is that lots of people were expecting stuff out of me, normally the results of your first term exams are like the first impression, that a person has about your studies and knowledge, and mine got completely blown off… so I'll have to work harder if i want to impress all the people who think I'm a dumb old hillbilly… i completely forgot that the primary reason of schooling is to educate yourself, i was completely out of the mood of studying, when i sit down with a book, i feel very guilty for what i have done.. i have to somehow score better next time cause i know that their are people who count on me… in order to succeed i need all the luck and blessings that i could get, so if you think that i deserve a second chance, please wish me success…

The roy-tho big match, or the 131st Battle of The Blues was covered by the media unit of royal college (murc). i am a member of murc. so i was also involved in this. it was one of the hardest tasks that we have ever undertook. we had to control 4 cameras, placed around the ground… and those 4 cameras had to be centralized, where a vision mixer will decide on which camera to put on air. okay, it sounds easy, but you have no idea how hard it was to set up this whole thing. well, actually, one of the reasons, why it was hard for us was because we weren't professionals, for pro’s this kind of stuff was as simple as ever… they do it effortlessly. but our people were just students, including me and my boss birendre. we had to work for about two weeks for this.. at first all of us thought that it was a good idea, day by day, that thought gradually changed from positive to negative..we were cursing each other, specially birendre for what he had gotten us into.. it was like hell for everybody, even for our boss.. the worst part is, that we ddnt get paid for what we did.. so, we did not have any funds, financial vice, we did not get anything out of it. our team consisted of ?? members, they were, Birendre, Sachit, Chathuska, Nipun, Minura(thats me), Prabodha, Chirath, Sahan, Sachitha, Mano, Ashan, Yasiru, Arkam, Kanchana, Thejitha, Isuru, Shavindra, Wishwajith. all of us felt this anger, but non of us complained, we went on, because we knew at the end of the day, we WILL achieve something big. we think that this is the first time ever, that school children ever did something of this sort in the whole of sri lanka, and possibly the world. all of us knew this fact, so we had loads of courage in us, we did not give up, we decided to carry on, no matter how tough this will get. the day before the match was the worst day, we had to place cables around the whole ground for the cameras. the suppliers promised to send 10 people for the job, but unfortunately for us, they only sent 2 people. it was bull shit, this was not what we signed up for, it was too much, everyone was pissed off, except birendre, who was still determined to carry on, he knew that we were on the verge off giving up, so he gave us a small talk, we knew that he was using his magic on us, but still we were unable to resist it’s power. we were back on the game, we regained all of that lost courage and determination, and we worked our asses off till night, and finally the big day arrived, the 11th of april, the 1st day of the match.. tension was running through our nerves, all of us were nervous, we had a little bit of that courage and determination, which was left over from the previous day, and that was it. early in the morning, we came to school, and from their we left for SSC, and as soon as we arrived, we were off to our battle stations, a three day war was about to unleash. our weapons were the cameras, and our enemies were the old boys. with a lot of pressure in our bodies, we began the coverage. somehow we got through the first day, then the second day, and at last the third day.. IT WAS FINALLY OVER!! and from their onwards, the only thing we cared was on having fun, and we did so…. we ran around SSC, acting like idiots, we knew that people didn't like it, but we didn't care, we were too exhausted to care, all we needed was to get rid of all those stress which was built up over the past few days… and FUN was the best medicine for that.. it was awesome…. i wont be saying on how we had fun because that’s a bit private, but i can assure you is that it was not as bad as you think, at least not as bad as getting a life sentence in jail..

do you like coke, or pepsi?? i think that coke is better... it tastes better, and it looks better too.. and its available almost anywhere... but pepsi is not that good... it tastes weird.. it has a sugary taste in it, which i dont like... but lots of people say that pepsi is better, but i still dont understand why.. im really confused here.. what is so good about pepsi? when i ask them, they point out stuid stuff like, pepsi has less presavatives in it.. as if anyone would care.. i mean we arnt going to keep that thing fr ever... we drink it as soon as we buy it... please tell me what u think about this...

did you know that i hate indians?? if not; I HATE INDIANS!! i dont know why i hate them.... i know that i am not a racist because most of the people that i associate with, come from different races... i think of indians as bad people,destroyers, evil men, devils from hell!! my history teacher, "mrs.barrel bargey", only made me hate them... for history we learnt that indians destroyed our country, they invaded the pearl of the indian ocean; SRI LANKA!! they destroyed our heritage, our culture, our national treasures!! india is a large country, its extremely huge! with a f*ck load of resources, even so those buggers invaded our small country.. it does not make any sense at all... another thing that i have noticed about indians is that they are quite greedy... they f*cking took everything from us and left us with nothing!! and that sucks!!! and those buggers are damn proud of it!! ARRGGHHH!!! i wish i could kill those bastards....

I AM NOT INSANE!! IM JUST HAVING FUN!! people say that life is short, and what the fu*k? I AGREE!! it is short!! thats why i want to have fun.. its okay to have fun as long as you don't hurt anyone else, or do something bad... lots of people do not agree with this.. they work their as*'s off and at the end they get nothing... nothing in the sense, they dont get any mental satisfaction, either they pile up a fu*k load of money and die with it, or they die with nothin at all.. and whats the fun in that? im not saying that we should not work, im just saying that we have to enjoy what we do.. once in a while we have to do something stupid, funny so that we could have a good laugh.. that makes our lives a hundred times better... in school, lots of people respect me.. because i am a considered to be a good person, im cool with everybody, and everybody is cool with me, i can control my temper properly and all... and all of them like me because i have fun, and they also have fun when they are hanging around with me.. so having fun is a way of being a socially accepted person... another reason why i act in this insane way is because it brings down my stress levels... so im always ready for anything... i dont think of life as a challenge... i dont take everything seriously... i dont mind whether people think that i am insane or not.. i just dont care.. this is my life.. i follow my methods.. and i am very successful compared to all the other buggers of my age... no one can say anything about it... its not illegal to have fun, and i dont have fun by doing illegal stuff... im a legitimate guy... i follow the rules... no matter what anyone would say i will not stop having fun... i always have my limits, i know when to stop, so i wont get into trouble... even if i do get into trouble, i wont stop.... so please don't tell me to stop..

YES!! I LIE!! so wht?? i have no other choice!! lying has become a way of life for me... i have to lie and i need to lie to survive, to exist!! Emjay de NaNa is an endangered species.. lying helps me to go on!! lying is considered to be a bad thing.. lying has been tabooed around the world, liars have been banished and harassed by the society.. even so, i admit to you that i am a liar.. hehe.. that means im a brave liar.. but you may think that i am a liar with no integrity.. I DON'T CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK!! this is my friggin life!! let me live, the way i want to live.. now you may be wondering whether i have ever lied to you.. most probably the answer will be yes.. so, if u think that i have lied to you, I AM SORRY!! i must have lied to you because of something really important... and sometimes, i save people by lying.. my friends ask whether they could come with me when i go for school work.. i always lie to them, for their own safety, i wont mind if they come with me, as a matter of fact, i would be happy if they come with me... but the thing is, they dont know how to get through all of those hurdles; the prefects, teachers, minor staff, etc.. so they will get into trouble.. then i would not be able to save them because i am always excused from the class, so i have to continue with my job... so in one way, my lying actually helps people... though i lie, i do not want u to lie to me.. i know that it will never happen.... i accept that lying is a bad thing... but i have to do it.. survival is more important...

the truth is something that everyone would like to or want to or need to know.. some people are even willing to risk their lives, just to get the truth... in every story there are two sides; the true one and the false one.. very rarely people get to know the true side.. even in my life, it is the same.. but one thing is certain, no one really knows the truth about me.. no one at all.. my parents, my relations, best friends, friends, associates , etc looks at me in different ways.. some people think that i'm good, kind, honest, loving whilst others think that i am a bad, evil, filthy brat... i hang out with different people, so no one really knows what i am up to, who my real friends are, what i do, my targets.. no one knows the full story, they only know parts of it.. at sometimes i feel sorry for my victims, but i just cant help it... I'M EVIL!! i'm a monster in disguise.. no one can prove it, and if anyone tries, may god be with them.. when your reading this you might be thinking what i have done to you.. don't worry, i have done nothing serious to you.. i have used you to the maximum, that is all.... but please do not come to me and ask about this, if you do, i will have to unleash the monster who is concealed within this human body.. it will be frightening, horrifying and deadly.. NO I WONT KILL YOU!! i'll just do something bad to you.. but u'll regret it in the end... you may think that there is no point in what i'm doing.. true.. there is no point in it at all.. theres no point on living, your just gonnna die at the end.. i'm also going to die.. i want to achieve something before i die.. i dont want to be a victim of this present lifestyle.. i want to do stuff the way i want to do it, that is why i act in secrecy.. that is the soul reason why i am concealing the truth from you.. now you might think that writing this will reveal to the world, that i am hiding the truth.. NO! it doesn't work that way, people who associate with me knows this.. i did not tell them, they found out by observing me.. this is just a note of confirmation.. practically, this is a warning.. even this is a part of my master plan to success.. and i know it will work.. i think about my actions thoroughly before i actually act.. so dear reader, i am sorry that yor have been one of my victims.. but at the end you will see what i'm really working on.. maybe in about abother 30 years or so..
